Gameplay[edit]
Combat in Fantasy War Tactics featuring an isometric grid-based battlefield.
Fantasy War Tactics is a classic SRPG with a vast map of 12 regions and 180 dungeons to explore, a PvP system, and more than 50 heroes to choose from. Fantasy War Tactics features an isometric grid-based strategic battle system. Players will deploy character units called Heroes, on the battlefield, taking turns to defeat opponents.[3]
The game also features 4 tactical mechanics that may affect the tides of battle: Cooperation, Advantage, Terrain, and Direction.[4]
- Cooperation happens whenever executing an attack on a target. If an ally is within the attack range, they will also join the assault, further increasing the damage to the target.
- Advantage happens when attacking a target whose property is weaker. This is determined by the Rock-Paper-Scissors system, wherein rock units deals extra damage to scissors units, scissors to paper, and paper to rock.
- Terrain is whenever executing an attack on a tile that is advantageous to the hero. Each hero has a specialized terrain that increases the damage output of his attack to the target. During the hero's turn, the specified tile(s) will be raised to distinguish the advantageous terrain.
- Direction increases damage to the target whenever attacking it from a direction other than the side it is facing.[5]
Heroes[edit]
Heroes are the playable characters in the game. They will serve as the Lord's companions throughout his journey of conquering the world. The game currently features 51 [6] heroes, each with a distinct set of abilities and skill sets. Heroes are categorized by their Property (i.e., Rock, Paper, and Scissors) and Battle-type (i.e., Attack, Area-Attack, Balance, Defense, and Support).[7] Heroes can be obtained by collecting their genetic fragments (or gene fragments) through the following methods: defeating them at their stages, participating in certain events, or buying them at the in-game shop using the game's currencies. After successfully recruiting a hero, the gene fragments can further be used for enhancing hero's skills.[8]
Player versus Player[edit]
Fantasy War Tactics has two game modes to promote interaction between players via a PvP (or Player Versus Player) scenario. The two game modes are Battle of Honor and Dimensional Breakthrough.[9][10]
Battle of Honor is a PvP-oriented game mode where players put up a team of 4 heroes to battle other players' teams and climb through the ladder determined by your Honor Points. Winning battles will increase your Honor Points while defeats will incur losses. Battle of Honor is formatted into seasons. Each season, players will have their Honor Points reset and are given a chance to climb up the ladder again. A season lasts for a week and every start of a new season, participants are handed out the rewards from the previous one. Rewards include are in the form of the in-game currency (i.e., Gold, Honor Medals) and the game's premium currency (i.e., Crystals) with an increasing amount based on how high the rank in the ladder is.[10]
The stages inside Dimensional Breakthrough, each level players must defeat another player's team in order to proceed to the next stage.
Dimensional Breakthrough is a survival scheme PvP game mode wherein players will go through a series of battles called Virtual Stages. Unlike Battle of Honor, heroes will not heal up completely and heroes who completely lose all of their HP can no longer participate in the subsequent stages. Also, Dimensional Breakthrough rewards participating players after winning a stage.[10]
Development[edit]
Fantasy War Tactics is a mobileSRPG developed by director Jung Keun Lee from Solar department of Nexon GT. Additionally, Sung Eun Jo and Hyo Jin Lim took part in main game design, Jy Chul Shin as the art leader and Su Hwan Jang as the programming leader. The game's first development stage goes back to 2013, when they started with the thought of bringing the console's SRPG to the mobile platform. In August 2015, the game went soft-launched in four different countries (Australia, Malaysia, Netherlands, Finland) with just a bit more than 20 project members. On the November 5th of 2015, the game started launching globally over 150 countries, not including Japan and China.[11]

Gamezebo's Rob Rich gave 3.5 out of 5 to the game, commenting 'Fantasy War Tactics is a pretty darned entertaining strategy RPG.' He wrote that there is always a plenty of contents to do for the players without too much promotion of premium or in-app purchases. However, he also felt that the difficulty spike of higher-LEL dungeons makes the grind part of the game quite noticeable. He added that grind part of the game can sometime become tiring even with the auto function during battles. In short, he concluded that Fantasy War Tactics can get tiring and difficult from time to time, but it is still a good game with pretty graphics and good amount of contents to be enjoyed.[13]
148App's Nadia Oxford was quite impressed with the game, scoring the game 4 out of 5. She wrote, 'Fantasy War Tactics gameplay should feel familiar to genre enthusiasts' and 'Fantasy War Tactics battles are brisk and engaging.' However, she also added 'but it makes you all the more aware of the game's stamina counter, which depletes quite rapidly.' She concluded 'Fantasy War Tactics isn't on the same level as Final Fantasy Tactics, but it's not a low-tier offering, either. If you're into strategy games, give it a go.'[12]

Fantasy War Tactics is a recently-released fantastic RPG from NEXON, which is available for Android and iOS devices. In the game, there are 12 regions and more than 180 dungeons for you to explore – the game seems to promise a maximum of 500 – and player-vs-player mode. You can go on adventures with 50 different heroes, with new heroes unlocked after you clear dungeons. You can collaborate with friends and join an adventure with their heroes, take part in different missions, collect various resources and gold from Nephthys Dungeon and Lab, and do so much more in this title.
If you’re one of the many who downloaded this game following its release, we’ve got a detailed list of Fantasy War Tactics tips, tricks and strategies for you that deals with a lot of facets of this title.
1. It’s About Rock, Paper And Scissors
Before entering one of the dungeons in this game, always take a look at the monsters’ party formation by clicking on the magnifying glass. That’s where you can tweak your party’s lineup of heroes to make sure you’ve got a stronger team. The game makes use of a rock-paper-scissors mechanics, so always choose members that have an edge over the monsters. Using a basic example, you can get a 30 percent increase in damage when attacking if you choose a hero that has a natural advantage over the enemy based on the rock-paper-scissors mechanic.
2. There Are Other Tactical Ways To Get An Advantage
This game isn’t called Fantasy War Tactics for nothing. And here are a few other examples of this point. If you attack a monster and your type of terrain has the advantage, that would activate a terrain strategy advantage, giving you a 20 percent damage bonus. And if you attack an enemy from an angle greater than 90 degrees, you’ll get a direction strategy advantage, for a 15 percent damage bonus.
3. Always Aim For Grade SS
What does Grade SS mean and what’s in it for you as a Fantasy War Tactics player? Grade SS, in case you’re wondering, is the dungeon grade you need to get if you want to get the best rewards possible; the higher your grade, the better the rewards. Reaching SS once means you’ll get that same grade the next time you clear a dungeon, regardless of your score. In addition, Grade SS could give you the boost you need in expeditions and give you better Regional bonuses.
4. Enhance Heroes And Equipment When You Can
As soon as you’ve found the right opportunity, make sure that you enhance and refine not only your equipment, but also your hero. Tweak the equipment you’ve got so that it matches your hero’s equipment and potential options.
5. Use Your Skill Tiles And Potions Prudently
Skill tiles and potions are both game-changers when it comes to doing battle with the enemy. However, monsters can use them as well, and that’s where your strategy will come in – you can’t just use these tiles and potions at any time and expect to win the battle! As a general rule, it’s never a good idea to use a health potion during a battle that you can win without taking a lot of damage, if at all.
6. Hire Mercenaries
In need of a helping hand? You can enlist the help of an ally’s mercenary, so that you can clear dungeons faster and attain higher scores. Better yet, mercenaries can cancel any stuns or de-buffs that your ally may be affected by.
7. Take Part In Those Special Events To Unlock More Heroes
There are some heroes in this game that you can only unlock if you take part in certain events, such as the Battle of Honor, Dimensional Breakthrough, and others. These heroes cannot be won directly, which makes it necessary to take part in the special events when you have time. And you can also get some nice rewards on top of hero unlocks. For example, you can earn the game’s premium currency of crystals, as well as additional energy based on your Battle of Honor rank. The Dimensional Breakthrough can net you a lot of gold if you complete its ten stages. Expedition is another type of event where you can get rewards, though these are best used in short bursts.
8. Go To Nephthys Dungeon For Hero Upgrade Materials
If you’re looking for materials for a Hero upgrade, you should go to Nephthys Dungeon. This dungeon is updated every day, which means you should also be visiting at least once a day to make sure you’ve got a chance at getting different items. Nephthys Dungeon is also a great place for you to pick up refined stones for equipment enhancements, as well as rebirth monsters.
9. Come Up With A Game Plan For Nephthys Boss Battles By Checking Their Traits
Here’s another thing you should keep in mind when you’re in Nephthys Dungeon. This dungeon’s monsters and boss characters have specific traits, and you can view a detailed “scouting report” for each level to help you formulate a good strategy. This screen shows you everything you need to know, such as the bosses’ active and passive skills, as well as various statistics and distinct traits that you may want to watch out for while in the dungeon.
10. Collect The Daily Crystals
This should probably go without saying, but as a final reminder before you start playing Fantasy War Tactics, you should always make it a point to collect the crystals you get as a reward for logging in daily. But only use these from the times you need them the most, e.g. for expedition upgrades, as this is a premium form of currency that ordinarily doesn’t come that easy.
